My Learning Design Philosophy

Engaging Images… Stories… Senses… Emotions… Colors… Learning!

Images…

…don’t require us to decipher meaning as we do with words – they are a meaning in themselves.

reduce cognitive load

Stories…

Before the written language, we had stories – our brain is hard-wired for images and story. Use of images and story naturally engages our brain, reduces cognitive load, and increases enjoyment in learning.

Negative Emotions…

When we are anxious, bored, angry, or sad, our higher-order cognitive processes like memory recall, problem solving, and strategic thinking tend be be disrupted. Frustration and fear often lead to disengagement or avoidance; anger or sadness can consume cognitive resources by focusing attention on personal grievances or external conflicts rather than training materials. However, deadline pressure can sometimes help us to adapt and act quickly!

we are people first

Positive Emotions…

When we are joyful, happy, or curious – we tend to have better learning outcomes, better motivation, focus, and memory. Postive emotions can bring learners to a “flow” state of deep focus, allowing performance beyond usual capabilities with higher engagement and skill acquisition. Positive emotions build a better sense of self, which helps manage stress, recover faster from challenging experiences, stay attentive longer, and respond better to constructive feedback.

trauma and learning

If there has been recent trauma, the effect on learning is more dramatic. Trauma diminishes concentration and memory, making it difficult for learners to retain and process information. Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks can further impair focus.

Skills like planning, problem solving, and organizations are often compromised, with learners struggling with tasks requiring sustained effort or logical reasoning.

Communication skills, reading comprehension, and the ability to articulate thoughts effectively can be hindered – slower information processing is common among trauma-exposed individuals.

If your organization or employees have recently been exposed to trauma or traumatic events, this would be something to discuss with your learning designer before starting a training program at your company.
